I've been back in the US, my home country, for about two months now. I've always said traveling makes you more aware of the world. 2025 so far is no exception.
During our trip from Russia to the US, we traveled through Doha, Qatar and Hong Kong, China. Doha was more enjoyable than Hong Kong to be honest. It certainly helped that in Doha we stayed in a nice hotel and got upgraded to a suite thanks to my status with Marriott.
About China, I never wanted to visit until recently. Being in Russia since 2019 likely influenced my decision. As China and Russia are often portrayed negatively in “Western” media, traveling to these countries doesn't seem appealing. But as someone who’s been to 38 countries now, I’ve learned to trust my own interpretation of what’s going on versus talking heads with an agenda.
As for Hong Kong —
It didn’t feel like China and I’m not alone in thinking this. Many people say if you want to visit “real” China, go to another city. Factually, Hong Kong is a separate area within China that has its own currency and immigration system. I wouldn’t recommend going and I wouldn’t fly there again unless it was necessary for a stopover.
Now, for the US —
I can't help but feel more comfortable here versus other countries. It's my home after all, but there's something more to the US vibe. The biggest difference?
It's coziness.
People in the US live have it easier when compared to countries. The days and economy here are based on convenience. From fast food to same day delivery to huge portions of food, we're the most pampered large country on the planet.
Which has its pros and cons.
The ironic thing is my family can live better life in Russia with the amount of money I make in US dollars. Even with everything going on, the US dollar is winning. For how long? No one knows for sure.
No matter what happens, diversification is important. And not just when it comes to money. Learning different skills is also imperative. Over 12 years ago I started making money as a copywriter. Fast forward to today, I still leverage this skill — and I'll continue to do so for as long as possible.
But, other skills I’m into lately include game design and AI. Not only are these skills beneficial, for me they’re a lot of fun. When I was starting out as a copywriter, I remember thinking I’d write copy even if I was broke and homeless. I loved doing it that much… and that passion is what allowed me to do it successfully.
I feel the same way about game design and AI. Except now with a family, it’s a lot harder to keep that “broke and homeless hustle” mentality — especially when trying to afford living in the US.
Anyway, I’ll stop here for now. A lot more to discuss but I’ll save further thoughts for another day. Back to work I go. :D
